Spicer Mansion in Mystic, CT.

Last spring I won a giveaway from Mallove’s Jewelers in Mystic, CT. They gave me a gift certificate to enjoy a cocktail hour up in the Belvedere room at Spicer Mansion. Spicer Mansion is a luxury boutique hotel near downtown Mystic. It is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood but still close enough to walk to downtown.

Spicer Mansion is full of history - it once was owned by a sailing captain. The captain also had donated Mystic & Noank Library which was across the street from Spicer Mansion. I have gone in the library several time to enjoy its beautiful historic building. I had no idea that those two were connected so it was an interesting fact! Spicer Mansion only recently opened in 2016 with eight guest rooms and dining hospitality.

The Belvedere is a small room on the top of Spicer Mansion with 360-degree views of Mystic. I won the gift certificate back in spring but saved it for fall time in hopes of seeing the leaves changing colors. I booked the evening the last weekend of September, but unfortunately the leaves hadn’t changed much yet.

I was amazed with the beauty of Spicer Mansion. When I pulled up in the parking lot, I immediately was drawn to the bright yellow mansion with a few bicycles lined up out front. It was very picturesque. They also had a BMW 750-i parked there which they chauffeur guests around town… maybe one day I’ll get that ride! Once I got out of the car, I smelled one of my favorite scent - campfire. They had bonfire site on the grounds surrounded with Adirondack chairs. I was tempted to sit there!

Walking into Spicer Mansion, I received a warm greeting from the front desk. After being escorted up to the Belvedere room, I took some time absorbing the views of Mystic. It was exciting to see Mystic from a different perspective so I quickly figured out where certain buildings were and what I was seeing. I could see parts of downtown Mystic, the iconic temple from Mystic Congregational Church, Whaler’s Inn, Seaport Marina and Mystic Seaport. Further out behind the downtown Mystic, with help of a telescope, I could see Block Island, Rhode Island! You could also see Fishers Island and Long Island if trees weren’t blocking the views. Despite the leaves not changing colors, the views were stunning. I was lucky to get a sunny day with dramatic blue sky!

The delicious hors d’oeuvres.

The delicious hors d’oeuvres.

After soaking in the views, the cocktail hour started off with sipping some of Louis Roederer champagne. The hors d’oeuvres followed shortly after - I got the duck confit empanadas and lobster dynamite. I have never tasted duck before! It was interesting to try - I didn’t think it tasted much different from some other meats I’ve had. I absolutely LOVE the lobster dynamite - lobster salad on top of crispy rice. It was delicious!

The cocktail hour in Belvedere room was a hour long - it was a very relaxing evening to enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres before heading to dinner in downtown Mystic. I really loved seeing the views of Mystic. I was told that the Belvedere room is the highest point in Mystic.

I was shown around Spicer Mansion after the cocktail hour - they have a beautiful dining room for their guests. They allow the public to come in to dine as well. There were a couple small rooms that suited meetings. In their basement, they have the Owner’s Club - a speakeasy bar where you could enjoy some drinks. It was very cool to explore that room - the entrance is a hidden door covered with a bookcase! I’m currently looking on Pinterest on how to build one for my home!
