July reads
Here are some of my July reads:
The Local [5/5]
A legal thriller! I love books with courtroom dramas as it takes me back to my college days (criminal justice major). I spent a lot time in the courts so I miss the ‘drama’. This book was about patent law, I was nervous thinking it’d be boring. It wasn’t! I was sure that I figured out the mystery before the ending, but it surprised me instead. A great read!
The MidCoast [5/5]
Maine lobstermen and crime reeled me in. This book was unique! A reporter who happens to be a friend of the corrupted family narrated the story. While reading, I felt like I was sitting with this person talking about ‘town gossip’ about that family. It’s not the typical thrillers I’ve read but I really enjoyed this book!
Every Summer After [5/5]
Oh my heart. This is a book about summer love. It was a heart tugging kind book. You can feel the emotions! It was so good that I devoured it all in a weekend … and I’m glad that I read it on my boat too! It’s the PERFECT summer read. I thought this book would be overhyped, but it is WORTH THE READ!!!
The Lost Summers of Newport [5/5]
Newport, Rhode Island is only a hour away from me and one of my favorite places. Of course, I’d pick up this historical fiction book and thankfully it did not disappoint! Told in dual storylines of a mystery within the families of a Gilded Age mansion in Newport. If you enjoy ‘old money’, corruption, forbidden love and Gilded Age mansions… this is the book for you!
The Ways We Hide [4/5] Coming out September 6th.
What an intriguing read! Fenna has experienced a lot in her lifetime, but her strength is inspiring. At first, I found the beginning chapters to be slow, but then it really picked up the pace! In the author’s note, she explains which parts were based on true stories. This was a very well written historical fiction, where the author really did her research. I was immersed into this read from the start to finish! Thank you to the Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley for the ARC for my honest feedback.
Vacationland [4/5]
Another great summer read. A family goes up to the Maine coastline every summer, to a house that has been the family for many generations. This summer there’s secrets that are uncovered within the family, this is a family drama saga type of read. I really enjoyed how there were several POV’s, especially the children (and it wasn’t confusing to keep track of the characters!). A great read about family, love, forgiveness and loyalty.
Being Heumann [5/5]
The end of July is the anniversary of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). Several books from disabled authors were circulating around and this memoir caught my interest. Whew, this book was a short 211 pages but heavy and informative! It is the story of someone with a disability fighting for her rights. Judy Heumann got sick with polio at the age of 5 causing her to be in wheelchair for rest of her life. Her activism and her strength… just made me have a great respect for her. Some of her experiences were jaw dropping, but not surprising as I’ve got my own stories with my deafness. This is a worthwhile read.
Unfortunately there’s a few books that were DNF (Did Not Finish). I really tried to like those books but couldn’t be interested enough to continue reading:
Marrying the Ketchups
City on Fire
Remarkably Bright Creatures
Also read in July, a blog is forthcoming:
The Couple at Causeway Cottage [4/5] UPCOMING BLOG August 12th.
