DIY bookshelf
After my husband and I wound down from the holidays and settling in the winter blues, we decided to do a home project. Our house didn’t come with a build-in bookshelf, I always wanted one to hold all of my books (well most!). My husband is handy when it comes to home projects, lucky me! I saw a few inspiration for the bookshelf style, after some time I spotted one on an Instagram stories from one of the people I follow. I admired her bookshelf for a long time so I finally showed it to my husband and he loved it too!
So it begun the bookshelf building process in early January. We got all the lumber from the hardware store. Worked on measuring and framing it to our desire. The TV is centered in the upper half middle of the bookshelf so we built it around it.
After my husband finished the framing, we put up the accent brick wall in the center (where the TV is). We planned on painting over the dark red to have that white wash style. We painted the entire bookshelf cream color since we had white walls. We didn’t want the bookshelf to blend in too much, it matched the color of our window trims. My husband painted the brick accent wall with white (same color of our wall) and wiped it to give it a washed look style.
My husband built the doors for the center bottom shelves which will be our little entertainment center (DVDs, games, etc). I went to Mystic Knotwork and bought the blue colored knots pulls for the doors. The bookshelf is located in our second ‘living room’ upstairs, it is Seaport/nautical themed. The knots pulls worked perfectly with the theme.
Then came the fun part, stocking the bookshelf with books, books and more books! I organized by special categories such as royals, classics, emergency responders-related, Irish/Ireland, the Holocaust stories, sports and more. I also put some trinkets on the shelves with the books.
I’m really excited about having this bookshelf as many of you know, I’m a huge bookworm! I love my books! Yes, I still have a LOT books that didn’t make it to the shelves so I may have to buy a few smaller bookcases in other rooms we have upstairs. All together the project was completed in a month and half (we only had free time on the weekends so it took about 5 weekends of constant working on it, waiting for paint to dry, etc).
It’s been fun to work on some home projects during winter when we are stuck indoors. We also have been working on a better organization system in our basement too. I put seasonal decor in bins and labeled them. We put up a few shelving units to store things. I’m not sure what our next project will be, but probably finish up decorating the extra rooms we have upstairs!
Let me know if you have been doing home projects, I would love to hear about them!
